About This Item

Seattle: Real Comet Press, 1989. First Edition. Hardcover in Original Shrinkwrap. Fine. 4to. Pp. [8], 9-144. Frontis. b&w photo. Illustrated throughout with reproductions of old prints and black-and-white photography. Bibliography. A variant binding intended for distribution to those involved in the production of the book, this in black cloth with metallic copper lettering stamped on front board and spine. As New. Signed by Obenzinger. (The last photo shows the common softcover.). Obenzinger was commissioned by the New York firefighters' union to write book documenting New York firefighters; the proceeds from sales were to benefit the Widows and Orphans fund. When the publisher went bankrupt; this book, a history of fires in New York City in verse rose from the ... result of a fresh vision. The work is mesmerizing.

From the Colonial era to 1980, accounts of the major conflagrations that beset Gotham, including the Triangle Shirtwaist building, the burning of Barnum's American Museum, the B-52 that crashed into the Empire State Building, etc. Also included as appendices are some first-person accounts related to fires: Herbert Dibblies explains the arson of his building to fellow convicts at Rikers; a son describes the death of his rat-thwacking mother, who died from "swallowing too much smoke;" Captain Zeno, who headed a Bronx fire station, explains his background as a paramedic and his rise in the ranks, along with gritty inner-city anecdotes, etc. A bright, fresh copy, As New.
