First line

ARRIVAL. Jake Barnes's work in Ernest Hemingway's novel is newspaper work, though we only glimpse him at it-reading French morning papers, turning to the typewriter and getting off his daily duty of rewrite for dispatch by weekly mail from Gare St. Lazare, attending a briefing at the Quai d'Orsay-before he is off from Paris for the Lost Generation escapades in Spain.
