In 1846 Thoreau refused to pay taxes because of the united States government's involvement in the Mexican War, which he firmly believed was unjust. For th is act of protest, he was thrown in jail. "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail" is a dramatic presentation of this famous act if civil disobedience and its consequences. The play was presented first inn 154 different productions by resident, community, and university theatres throughout the United States.
