London: Secker and Warburg, 1949. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Good Only. 7.5" by 5". None. An uncommon, first edition copy of George Orwell's most famous work, Nineteenth Eighty-Four. A renowned work of dystopian social science fiction. Particularly scarce with the original dustwrapper, which is unclipped.  This copy is in the green dustwrapper variant, which has no priority as it was issued at the same time as the plum dustwrapper. Set in an imagined future in the year 1984 Great Britain is known as Airstrip One and is a province of the totalitarian superstate Oceania ruled by a Party, the leader named Big Brother, who employ the Thought Police to persecute independent thought.  An important novel in the literary canon, which has been responsible for popularising the term 'Orwellian' as well as 'Big Brother', 'doublethink', 'thought police' and 'newspeak'. Orwell was the pen-name of Eric Arthur Blair and this work is his social commentary against totalitarianism, and is in support of democratic socialism. Former owner's ink inscription to the recto of front endpaper, dated July 9th 1949. A lovely example of Orwell's final work. In the publisher's original cloth binding. With the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, very smart. Minor fading to the board edges, as is common with this work. Dustwrapper is sound. Loss to the top panel of spine, and to the head of rear wrap. Chipping to the bottom edges and closed tear to the rear joint. Bottom of spine is lifting slightly. Rubbing to the extremities of wrap. Former owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. The odd spots to pages. Very Good Indeed
