New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1970. Stated First Edition Folio size tan clothbound hardcover with decorative red border and dust jacket; 256 pages with 230 reproductions, 60 in color. From jacket: "(The author) begins with the brilliant artists of the Revolutionary Generation - West, Copley, Stuart and C.W. Peale - who were still triumphantly active when the 19th century opened. He then considers the tragic efforts of Allston, Vaderlyn and morse to acclimate a borrowed art to the young republic. Next comes the esthetic revolution sparked by Thomas Cole: painting landscapes directly from American nature, Cole opened the way for those other painters of the American countryside and coast - Durand, Kensett, Heade and many others."
