About This Item

London: John Murray, 1849. Second edition. Hardcover. g. Octavo. XXX, [2], 399, [1], XII, 491, [1]pp. Original 3/4 calf over marbled paper covered boards with gold lettering and tooling on spines. Engraved frontispiece. When first published in 1849, "Nineveh and Its Remains" became the earliest and one of the most successful archaeological best-sellers. This work is an account of Layard's expedition to Mosul on the eastern bank of the Tigris River, where he found Nineveh. He also uncovered the palace of Sennacherib and many extraordinary artworks. Perhaps most important, however, was his discovery of large numbers of cuneiform tablets from the state archives, from which much about Assyrian and Babylonian culture and history was eventually learned. He also made soundings at Ashur, Babylon, Nippur, and other sites in Babylonia and Assyria. This 2-volume set is complete and extensively illustrated throughout with 3 folding plans, a large folding map and numerous in-text and full-page woodcuts. Moderate shelf-wear and sporadic rubbing along edges of bindings. Previous owner's ex-libris on inside of each front cover (John Fenwick of Newcastle upon Tyne, Attorney at Law). Previous owner's name on upper margin of each title page (Lucy Angus Emerson) and dated 1865. Bindings in overall good, interior in good+ to very good condition.
