Written by Austen Henry Layard, an English Assyriologist, art historian and politician, best known as the excavator of Nineveh.Nineveh was an ancient city in Upper Mesopotamia, located in modern-day Iraq. For many years it was considered the largest city in the world, but was abandoned in the late 13th century. With seventeen plates to volume I, including four folding plates, and with a folding map to the rear, and with thirteen plates to volume II, including two folding. Collated, complete.In the original pictorial cloth bindings, with the publisher's advertisements to the paste-downs and free endpapers.With former owner's inscriptions to the head of each title page.The third edition of this work, published in the same year as the first. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth bindings. Bumping to back strip head and tails, with light fading to spines, and small closed tears to the head and tail of the second volume. Front hinge of volume I lightly strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Inscriptions to title page heads. Light spotting to title pages and plate perimeters, with pages otherwise clean and bright. Very Good
