About This Item

New York: George H. Doran Company, 1926. First Thus. Decorated cloth cover. Very Good+. Translated from the Dutch by John de La Valette, and with a three-page preface by him. Pp. 284. Illustrated with 24 b&w photo reproductions. Bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering stamped on spine. Top edge untrimmed. Discreet previous owner's name in ink on front pastedown; corners a tad bumped; dust-soiling to top edge. Despite those detracting qualities, a Very Good+ copy. A scarce imprint, with no available online copies of this Doran edition at the time of this listing. While ostensibly an observation of life in Japan, the author starts out with a trip to mainland China from Hong Kong; the first 30 pp. cover his views of China. The frontispiece photograph shows shops and shopkeepers in Canton.
