Description

London: Chatto & Windus, 1876. First Edition. Very good in publisher's mottled-grey printed wrappers with some browning to wrappers and chafing to upper corner (where it appears some penciling was erased).. First edition. Lytton Strachey's copy, with his faded penciled ownership signature to the head of the upper wrapper and with his Dora Carrington-designed bookplate to the verso. Shortly before theirs deaths in 1932, Carrington wrote in her journal, "As I stuck the book plates in with Lytton I suddenly thought of Sothebys and the book plates in some books I had looked at, when Lytton was bidding for a book and I thought: These books will one day be looked at by those gloomy faced booksellers and buyers. And suddenly a premonition of a day when these labels will no longer (be) in this library came over me. I longed to ask Lytton not to stick in any more." Anne Chisholm, ed. Carrington's Letters Her Art, Her Loves, Her Friendships. 8vo. [2], 2-24pp. Wise 63 (noting 2,000 copies were printed and never reprinted as of his publication).
