Philadelphia: Printed by James Kay, Jun. & Brother, 1837. Near Fine -. [1], 408-417, [3] p., 2 leaves of engraved plates (containing 7 illustrations); 29 cm. Disbound from a larger volume. This article by Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) was read before the Society on April 2, 1836. Bache was the great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin and the grandson of Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Dallas. He taught engineering at West Point; served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers; taught natural philosophy and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1827 to 1843; and served as the first president of Central High School of Philadelphia, from 1839 to 1842. In 1843 he became superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, a position he held until his death. In Near Fine- Condition: disbound from a larger volume, but solid; light foxing; otherwise, clean and bright.
