About This Item

Philadelphia: published by the author, 1878. Book. Very good condition. Hardcover. First Edition. Octavo (8vo). 594 pages of text. Original beveled cloth binding with minor fraying to 3 corners and minimal shelfwear; protected in archival mylar. While the textblock remains intact, there is a weakening of the inner hinge following the title page. A relatively small, light and inconsistent stain to the bottom edge of most of the illustrations and some pages adjacent to the illustrations, progressively increasing in size, only affecting the margins of the illustrations but in some cases touching the text. Contains 45 illustrations. Cowan, CA & Pac West: "The author was a pioneer journalist. There is much contained in this interesting work that is not to be found in any other source, more especially of the Territorial pioneers, and pioneer journalism in California." Zamorano 80, #76. Wheat, Gold Rush #215. The text is otherwise clean and unmarked. First edition..
