About This Item

Willowdale, Ontario: Hounslow Press, 1989. 159 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 10 5/8" D). "Perhaps nothing evokes a particular time and place more vividly than photographs: the stiff family studio portraits of the Victorians, sad formal pictures of young men standing proudly in their wartime uniforms, grainy snapshots depicting people in the 'new look' clothes of the 1940s. (The author) has selected over 160 black and white photographs from the 1890s to the 1950s, divinding them into ten sections under headings such as, 'Rural Life', 'War and Disaster', 'On Sea and Shore', and 'Ceremony and Celebration'. Each section is arranged, when possible, in chronological order. Fishermen and miners, farmers and firemen, sailors and students, parents and children are captured at work, at school, and at play. Towns, stations, ships, parades, plays and picnics illuminate this glimpse of a vanished way of life." Light edge wear - mostly on bottom edge. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good+.
