Abandonando su posicin como una de las mujeres ms ricas de Lima, Senz trabaj clandestinamente con conspiradores para derrocar los representantes corruptos del reino espaol. Este camino eventualmente la llev a conocer a Bolvar en 1822, cuando ella tena veinticinco aos. La atraccin fue inmediata y por ocho aos fueron amantes, hasta la muerte de Bolvar. Durante esta poca turbulenta, Manuela luch en varias batallas, consiguiendo el rango de coronel, y fue eventualmente encarcelada, herida y por ltimo desterrada de por vida de Colombia y Ecuador.
