First American edition of this book. Published by T. Allen, New York, 1792. Binding is fine. Modern half leather and marbled boards by Starr Bookworks. Interior is very good. Has a few stamps from New York Mercantile Library. Edges show foxing, interior is toned, occasional old creases, no vandalism, writing or other issues. Pages remain supple. Lacking old blanks, otherwise complete as issued. Lee was a British born career military officer who sought to lead the Continental Army in place of Washington. Lee is most famous now for his various hasty and leisurely retreats including being captured in his night gown by the British in 1776. After a prisoner exchange in 1778 Lee resumed command only to be court-martialled a few months later for insubordination. He must have had something going for him because he survived 30 years of military encounters where strategic withdrawal was not always an option. Interior is outstanding: prior bookseller's note on blank, no other writing, folds or problems. The supple laid paper is beautiful. Paginates: blanks(2), [10], 3-210, [22], blanks(2); includes two fold out plates. Complete as issued. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Author is John Harington but writings attributed to him date from 1543 to 1693. More likely written by several generations of Haringtons. More Notes: This curious collection titled "Old Nonsense" by the author, includes letters and fragments of writing by an incredible variety of important historical figures including: Elizabeth the First, James the First, Thomas Seymour, Thomas Fairfax, Isaac Newton and more. Includes a letter by Harington written while confined in the Tower with Elizabeth. Seymour's letter written just prior to his beheading is riveting. Even More: This volume has some exceptional physical qualities: It has "hand" meaning it feels great in your hand; the binding is visually appealing; the paper is pleasing to the touch, it even smells great. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.

Her husband Joseph Morrell Dodge had a long and distinguished career and tried to help reform Europe but later wound up as financial advisor to Douglas MacArthur in the economic revitalization of Japan. This edition is in very good condition internally. Photos of Ikebana arrangements by the famous Japan Ikebana master. A gift given to Julia Jeffers Dodge and placed in her library. 38 single sided (double page but other side blank) on high quality Japan paper with photo examples of Ikebana, black and white. A rare publication.
