Although reprinted in the late 1970s and 2000s, this is a genuine 1945 that has been incredibly well preserved. Although one would assume by the title that it is solely a book on numerology, it delves much further. It includes passages on mysticism, mythology, spirituality, and more. This is a must-have for anyone who studies the occult and esoteric sciences. It's incredibly well-written. This book was light years ahead of its time, and truth be told, even our own... I would snag this one before someone else does, as these are incredibly hard to come by.Here are a "few" of my favorite pieces from the book, but there are many more."Nothing in the world is single; All things by a law divine.""If you seek his monument, look about you.""The Master Pythagoras himself leads off with this: "All things are fittingly ordered according to the nature of numbers; number is the eternal essence; God is number; number is God."'Numerology is not defined in the dictionaries printed ten or more years ago. There is a place for it- there is a place for everything, in a dictionary- between numero and numerosity. An older equivalent of the term is number mysticism. Under this name, there is a vast numerology literature in the histories of philosophy and mathematics. Nor should the careers of science and theology be overlooked. Numerology has played its part there, also.'"The deeper the excavator's spade digs in Egypt and Mesopotamia, the farther back in time are the beginnings of astronomy, astrology, mathematics, and numerology. There are fair reasons to believe that these four "sciences" developed in the indicated order. Certainly, universal numerology.""Numerology was born the hour Pythagoras discovered the law of musical intervals. Before seeing how his brilliant discovery tricked him into universal numerology, let us think back to 500 B.C. Then we shall appreciate, from our blas indifference to the marvels which science crowds into our hands, how tremendous the step Pythagoras took."From the Odd and the Even, all numbers are generated. Number, therefore, is the ruler and essence of gods and men, and numbers are both the substance and the attributes of anything and all things." In the science of acoustics, pitch, harmony, and other qualities of sound are ultimately resolved into something or another concerning vibration, and vibrations have what is technically known as frequency. From the frequency, a number is derived. Finally, then, harmony has precise relations to numbers.""There are three spiritual elements, namely, heart, soul, and mind, and four corporeal elements, namely earth, air, fire, and water, from which all material things are fashioned; there are a total of seven elements."Eric Bell was part of the faculty at the University of Washington and later at the California Institute of Technology. While at the University of Washington, he taught Howard P. Robertson and encouraged him to enroll at Cal Tech for his doctoral studies.Bell researched number theory; see, in particular, the Bell series. He attempted—not altogether successfully—to make the traditional umbral calculus (understood at that time to be the same thing as the "symbolic method" of Blissard) logically rigorous. He also did much work using generating functions, treated as formal power series, without concern for convergence. He is the eponym of the Bell polynomials and the Bell numbers of combinatorics. In 1924, Bell was awarded the Bôcher Memorial Prize for his work in mathematical analysis. In 1927, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1937. He died in 1960 in Watsonville, California.
