Washington, D.C.: Robert Armstrong, 1852. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Laid in is the clipped Henry Clay signature, the printed invitation to a February 27, 1844 ball for Clay in Mobile, and a ticket signed by sculptor Leonard W. Volk for one chance for a marble bust of Clay. Memorial volume for the American statesman famous as "The Great Compromiser" for his role in defusing sectional crises. Leader of the Whig party and five times an unsuccessful presidential candidate, Henry Clay (1777-1852) played a central role on the stage of national politics for over forty years. He was secretary of state under John Quincy Adams, Speaker of the House of Representatives longer than anyone else in the nineteenth century, and the most influential member of the Senate during its golden age. 135 p. with frontispiece portraits of Henry Clay and Hernan Cortes, respectively (the latter is not called for and may have been inserted by mistake). Octavo. In a period one-quarter black calf over marbled paper binding, with new gilt-stamped morocco spine labels. Closed tear extending from the fore-edge of p.33-42. Light foxing to the frontispiece portraits and the opposing leaves. Period engraving of Clay affixed to the front pastedown. A bit of scuffinf and wear to the leather; else about very good.
