About This Item
London, 1784.. 8,[6],287,[1]pp. plus eleven tables (of twelve), many folding, some occupying more than one page. Original boards, rebacked in paper at an early date, manuscript title on spine. Boards worn and stained, hinges cracked. Occasional foxing and staining, small tear along gutter of titlepage, chip in one table with some loss of text, one table detached. Lacking endpapers and one table. Good. Third edition, enlarged, first published the previous year. This report led to a bitter post-Revolutionary situation as England tried to constrain American trade. "Pointed out superciliously the helpless position of American commerce, and thus influenced the shaping of England's trade policy from 1783 to 1789, so detrimental to American commerce and shipping interests as to contribute greatly to the formation of a Federal union, better able, than were the separate federated states, to retaliate against British maritime might" - Howes. HOWES H616. SABIN 32633. GOLDSMITHS 12622. KRESS B.785.
