Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office. Very Good. 1915. First Edition. Hardcover. A collection of letters by and to James S. Calhoun (1802-1852), acting in his position as Indian agent at Santa Fe, Superintendent of Indian Affairs in New Mexico, and first Governor of New Mexico Territory. The letters sat in various locations in Washington, D.C. until organized and edited into this volume by Annie Heloise Abel, and published in 1915. A common thread in the letters is Mr. Calhoun's ". . .complaint of inadequate support from Washington." With an unattributed introduction (probably by Abel), and a set of 4 folded maps in rear pocket. The maps depict: 1) Sketch map of potential Indian agency localities in New Mexico; 2) Map of pueblos in New Mexico; 3) Map of Territory of New Mexico and 4) Map of country between the frontiers of New Mexico and Arkansas. Also with portrait of Calhoun near front of volume. --- In tan cloth-covered boards with titling in black to spine; fillets in black to covers. First edition (Howes C.28). --- With some cover soiling including black splatterings (ink?) to front, prior owner's penciled signature to front paste-down, else a clean, tightly-bound copy. Maps in excellent condition.; Octavo (8 to 9 in. tall); xiv, 554 pages .
