About This Item
New York: Random House, 1945. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/good. First printing stated. Hardcover in black cloth stamped in red. 244 pp. Very good, printed on the usual wartime thinner stock paper. In edgeworn dust jacket. True story of United States Navy Commander Columbus Darwin ("Smitty") Smith. At the outgraek of World War II, Smith was piloting a river steamer in China and quietly keeping official and hush-hush notes on big-time pirates, smugglers, and foreign spies who were operating more and more boldly along the China coast. After America entered the war, he donned his uniform openly; he was captured by the Japanese, escaped, re-captured and confined to an "escale proof" prison in Shanghi. He escaped again. By this time, to his family and associates, he was "officially dead" but actually continued as an operative for the Navy.
