He dreams of all the things he will teach him when his son is old enough. However, the father is too busy with work, and he misses spending time with his son. As the boy grows, the father becomes caught in the demands of an adult world-meetings, conventions, and work. The father's dreams of shared activities with his son become the boy's solitary pursuits. Despite this, the book attempts to develop a happy ending, but it maintains a wistful, melancholy quality throughout. The detailed black-and-white illustrations by Wendy Wolsak enhance the text and depict the passage of time as the characters mature.
