A very good four volume set in contemporary, full tree calf binding with double lettering pieces in red and green. Complete pp. [iii]-vii, [1] 222; [2], 206; [2], 238 & [2], 198. No half-titles which may or may not be wanting, but the pagination for the prelims to vol. I might suggest that one is required? Very good bindings with a little rubbing, a couple of volumes slightly chipped to the head/tail of the spines, corners lightly bruised. Contents clean and tight, manuscript (Greek?) initials to title pages dated 1788 otherwise unmarked, no foxing, paper crisp. A very good set. A Rare Eighteenth Century Novel. We have managed to located just one other copy at auction in the last thirty years and that at Sotheby's sale of July 21, 1993, where it made £1,000 on the hammer, though seemingly not such a nice copy. Jacket and book are both first state -- first state dust jacket with the Kerouac blurb and the unrevised text and in the book on page 9 the uncorrected reference to the "fool Red Cross woman and and with "It's the plump Red Cross woman named Gwen-doe-lin, with the blond hair the patients are always arguing about." on pp. 85-86.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

Fred De Fau & Company. New York. 1902. LIMITED EDITION. One of 1,000 numbered sets, this number 942. 10 volumes. 8vo. (7.7 x 5.5 inches). Finely bound by Brentanos in contemporary half tan morocco. Each spine with five raised bands, decorated with gilt piping. Compartments multi ruled and lettered in gilt and with blind tooled centre decorations. Marbled paper on boards. Gold on grey marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt, the others untrimmed and a few gatherings still unopened. Illustrated with decorative head and tail pieces, vignettes in the text and multiple full page black and white illustrations by F. S. Coburn throughout. Each frontis plate protected with a printed descriptive tissue guards. Title pages printed in red and black. Pages nice and clean throughout. There is some minor bumping and rubbing to the corners of the bindings and a couple of small scratches to the lower board of volume 9 but overall this is a near fine, handsome set in excellent condition that looks wonderful on the shelf.

Second edition published in the Contemporary Fictions series and the only edition, besides the first, bearing Sylvia Plath's pseudonym Victoria Lucas. Binding is tight and square, light bump to top right corner of rear side. No marks or inscriptions, pages are clean. Light foxing to top- and fore edge. In near fine dust jacket with lightest rubbing to spine ends and corners and light fading to spine. 258 pp. 19 x 13 cm. .
