Original two-colour lithographed portrait of Thomson by Town, signed and numbered in pencil by the artist, 185 mounted coloured illustrations after Thomson, 81 uncoloured illustrations, most after or of Thomson. A fine record by artist Harold Town and noted art historian David Silcox of the life and work of the influential early 20th-century Canadian artist Tom Thomson. He died early, but his work proved to be a direct influence on the group of Canadian painters that would come to be known as the Group of Seven. His work continued to affect (less directly) the…

Lacking the legend below the image. One of Sadeler's three "Kitchen" scenes, this one with Lazaraus seen from behind at right with two dogs,, seated and looking at a dinner table with the rich man, a kitchen with a maid tending a spit over a fire and other servants preparing food. The wall has a display of plates, pots and aging game hanging from hooks, some fish in a basket, and vegetables and a broken egg in the foreground, a boy taking a basket with eggs from under the table, and a monkey behind him. After Jacopo Bassano, c. 1598. The engraving was laid down onto another sheet of paper at some point in the mid 20th century, having been trimmed to the edges of the image at some earlier date. The outlines of the legend have been drawn in. Some very light foxing to the image. [British Museum 1868, 0612.499; Spencer Museum of…

New York: Random House, 1957. FIRST EDITION. No. 438 OF 450 SIGNED COPIES. 205 x 130 mm. (8 x 5 1/8"). 5 p.l., 371 pp. FINE CONTEMPORARY BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with filigree cornerpieces, gilt titling, turn-ins with decorative gilt roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Petersen A34c. ◆Just a breath of wear to the binding, but a near-mint copy, pristine internally. This is a desirable signed copy of the second volume in Faulkner's "Snopes" trilogy, a work written near the end of his storied career. As ANB observes, "Faulkner drew on the history of his region, its brief rise and its rapid fall; on its rich oral traditions, "the rag-tag and bob-ends of old tales and talkings" (as he called them in 'Absalom, Absalom!') that he had begun gathering from the air in his seemingly misspent boyhood and youth; on its customs, mores, folkways, and dialects; and even on its vegetation, geography, and wildlife. Faulkner's fiction conveys a sense of the past and its force.".

New York: Sylvan Cole Gallery, 1985. Quarto. (13 1/4 x 10 inches). Portfolio with complete text and 8 etchings, printed by Stephen Sholinsky at Stem Graphics, New York, and published by Associated American Artists, New York. Each etching signed by Bishop and numbered I/VII. Publisher's gray clamshell cloth box, upper cover and spine lettered in gilt. One of seven sets of artist's proofs, with each of the 8 etchings signed and numbered by Bishop, a groundbreaking twentieth-century social realist. Upon packing up her Union Square studio in 1983, Bishop discovered a small group of original copper printing plates from 1930-1959 which had only been used for one or two proofs and had otherwise not been printed. As the colophon relates: "Until this printing, only proofs of these images were ever printed. This printing was done on Rives Heavyweight paper by Stephen Sholinsky of Stem Graphics, New York . . . The total number of impressions pulled from each plate is 60." There is a regular edition of 50,…

Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1943 Book. Illus. by Cartoons By Author. Good. Hardcover. Signed By 11 Cartoonists and Other Celebrities. 5 3/4 x 7 1/2 Inches. Original red, white and blue paper covered boards with cartoon of a soldier and his lady on the front. Paper on spine has come away from spine at front gutter, but is still present. Hand soil. This book was written by the first openly black cartoonist to be syndicated in white newspapers in the U.S. We believe that this important piece of comic strip history was given as a gift to cartoonist C.D. Russell (who was identified as an influence on Campbell in his obituary) and his bride (?), Mary, in 1945. The blank pages in the front and back of the book have been signed along with sketches by some of the earliest members of the National Cartoonists Society: Milton Caniff, Jay Irving, Otto Soglow, George McManus, Bela Zaboly, Paul Frehm, Gus Edson, Dow Walling, Bill Holman, Ed Hughes, and Elmer Woggon. In addition, there are signatures…
