About This Item

Boston & New York:: Houghton, Mifflin and Company / The Riverside Press, 1899. 5" wide by 8" tall. A bright, square, tight 2-volume set -- STILL IN THE ORIGINAL PRINTED DUST JACKETS. Both dust jackets are intact, with only a few small chips and two short closed tears (1 inch or less). The jackets have some mild sun darkening, but the printing on them (title, volume number, author, publisher) is still clear and distinct. 19th century dust jackets, especially in condition as nice as these, are uncommon. Each jacket is protected by a removable Brodart clear-plastic sleeve. The two volumes are uniformly bound in the publisher's matching blue cloth, lettered in shiny gold on the spine. Sharp corners. Inner hinges are perfect. NO owner's name or bookplate. Top edges gilt. This history begins with Elizabethan-era voyages to the New World, and then quickly progresses to the story of Virginia -- starting with Sir Walter Raleigh and Richard Hakluyt -- and continuing until 1753 when a youthful George Washington warned the French from encroaching upon English territory. Includes as well some history of Maryland and the Carolinas. Illustrated with several maps.. Early printing (Twelfth Thousand).. Hard Cover. Near Fine condition./Very Good Dust Jackets.. 2 vols: xxi, 318pp.+ xvi, 421pp. (+4 pages ads).

About About Books

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of over 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialties listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well. Because most of our books are stored in protective boxes, rather than on shelves, they cannot be viewed as a whole. If you wish to visit us to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please, only between the hours of 8am and 10pm (west coast time).
