Attractively bound in period 3/4 red morocco over marbled boards, spines with raised bands and gilt floral tooling within compartments surrounded by gilt scrollwork, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers (slight wear). This volume is from the 26-volume set of Carlyle, with text based on the Appleton edition (and apparently printed from their plates). It is undated (date supplied by Worldcat). 'Edition de luxe. This edition is limited to 100 copies, of which this is no. 36.'.

1845. Chapman and Hall 1845. Stout 8vo., 2 volumes bound by Bayntun in half single gilt ruled morocco, spines lettered and panelled in gilt, top edges gilt. Frontispiece portrait in volume 1. Extra-illustrated with the insertion of c. 160 engraved portraits. Upper joint of volume one a little tender with a small repaired split to bottom, a portion of headcap on volume 1 missing, a little occasional light spotting, generally a very good set. First edition. A supplement volume was issued a year later.
