Edward Abbey was offered an award by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1987. He declined the offer, so that he might run a river in Idaho the same week. Wendell Berry states on the jacket- "We are living... among punishments and ruins. For those who know this, Edward Abbey's books remain an indispensable solace.
