Brighton, Sussex: Moon's Society, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Helen Keller's 1903 essay rendered into Moon's type, an embossed alphabet and reading system for the blind. Invented by the Englishman Dr. William Moon in 1845, after he went blind as the result of an illness at the age of 21, this system is primarily seen as most useful to others who lost their sight after learning to read in the conventional way. This printing was commissioned by J.M. Pereles of the Wisconsin Free Library Commission, in his wife's name on the occasion of her birthday anniversary, May 22nd; the commission's name is embossed on the "Alphabet page" at the front end. Moon's Society, 1906; no additional printings indicated; folio in landscape orientation, 28.5cm x 36cm; marbled paper over brown cloth, paper title plate on spine; tipped-in half sheet catalog of works published in Moon's type, [1], 53pp. Sturdily sewn binding remains fully intact; embossed characters remain clean and firmly raised; moderate amount of wear at edges and corners of boards, title plate age-toned and rubbed (due to curving of spine) but whole; some fraying and small closed tears at page edges. A very scarce edition of a work by one of the most fascinating Americans of the 20th century--blind, deaf, or otherwise. From a private collection. Upon his return to England, he was offered inducements by English politicians to write a book that would ruin the reputation of the members of the Darien Company. His book was "Declared by a royal proclamation to be a 'false, scandalous, and traitorous libel'."
This book, attributed to Ridpath, is an answer to Herries's book, and an attack on English politicians. Ridpath was a Scottish journalist who wrote and supported Whig interests against the Tories.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
