Lydia, modern society girl, fond of hunts & golf, weds for security, finds a better match and a novel means of securing 'enough to live on', will she be socially 'cut', or is divorce now acceptable?; Jane Austen spins in grave. Grant, a Harvard graduate & probate judge, wrote a number of popular novels on the foibles of society & the upper classes from 1880-1931; he also served on the Governor's Committee examining the trial of Sacco & Vanzetti. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured; first edition (first printing) with same date on title & copyright pages; cover design of a country club by the Decorative Designers. Laid in is a folded flyer advertising Scribner's Spring Fiction on which The Orchid is the lead title. Light wear to book, spine ends bumped, minor water damage to rear cover; jacket torn & chipped, internally mended with archival tape, missing about a one-inch+ square from spine, waterstains to rear panel & flap; light foxing to endsheets & page edges; waterstain affecting the lower corner of the last four or so leaves, mostly publisher's ads for Grant's other books. Text clean; [6], 229 pages + 4 pages ads; 4 color plates (one with the front quarter of a motor car) as called for.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Fair. Illus. by Alonzo Kimball. Duodecimo.
