About This Item

New York: Random House, 1998. First edition and first printing. Hardcover. 284 pages. A well received non-fiction book on the case of horticulturist John Laroche who poached orchids from a Florida state preserve. The loose basis / inspiration for Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze's movie "Adaptation." A clean very near fine copy in a very near fine dust jacket. Signed by Orlean on the half title page. A very nice copy that includes a letter from a Random House marketing executive presenting this book to a publisher rep.

Synopsis

The Orchid Thief is a non-fiction book by American journalist and author Susan Orlean, based on her investigation of the 1994 arrest of John Laroche and a group of Seminoles in south Florida for poaching rare orchids in the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve. The book is based on an earlier article that Orlean wrote for The New Yorker magazine. Laroche, a plant dealer, was determined to find and clone the rare Ghost Orchid for profit.
