Description

Pittsburgh, 1957. Very good. Frame measures 14.5 x 11.5 inches, very good. Shows the "rank and file GOP" with boxing glove marked "Drew" delivering a roundhouse punch to Joe McArdle. Joseph McArdle served in the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives from 1936-1938, when he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-sixth and Seventy-seventh Congresses and served until his resignation on January 5, 1942, to become a member of the Pittsburgh City Council. He served as a Pittsburgh City Councilman until 1949. Also in 1949, he switched parties to turn Republican, and became the State GOP committeeman from Mount Washington, Pennsylvania, from early 1950 until 1966. McArdle's switching to the GOP roused suspicions among the GOP and in the mayoral primary, Common Pleas Court judge John Drew handily defeated McArdle; Drew in turn was handily defeated by the incumbent Democrat David A. Lawrence for a fourth term. A prize-winning political cartoonist, Art Wood worked at the Richmond News Leader before moving to Pittsburgh, where he was the chief editorial cartoonist for the Pittsburgh Press from 1956 to 1965.
