Description

New York: The American Home Missionary Society, 1885. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 229pp. A very good copy in the publisher's thin dark green/blue cloth. Spine gnetly sunned, some mild wear to extremities, and the cheap paper stock age-toned, else sound. This copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Strong on the front free endpaper: "H. W. Bill with kind regards of Josiah Strong." Strong was a passionate Protestant missionary, who believed that the quick grown of industry and mechanized labor was in danger of changing the character of ordinary people, and moving them further away from God. He was, controversially, also quite critical of Catholicism and Mormonism, and held a patronizing attitude towards non-white groups. He was, nevertheless, an influential figure in the era of the Social Gospel, and we were unable to trace any signed copies of this book in auction records.

We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
