About This Item

London: Chapman and Hall, 1865. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. [5], viii-xi, [2], 2-320; [3], vi-vi, [2], 2-309, [3] pp. Bound from parts as evidenced by the stab-holes throughout. Two volumes bound in one (title pages state "In Two Volumes", "Vol. I"; "In Two Volumes", "Vol. II"). Bound in half contemporary green calf over green pebbled cloth, with the delineations in the binding ruled in gilt; spine in seven compartments, each compartment ruled in gilt. Red morocco label lettered in gold on the spine, textblock speckled. Bound without the wrappers, half-titles, and advertisements. Lacks the errata slip that is occasionally found in copies of this work. Contains the postscript. Each volume illustrated by a frontispiece with 38 additional wood engravings by Marcus Stone. The final plate is bound in at page 303 rather than page 292. Eckel 95. Gimbel A149. Hatton & Cleaver 345. A nice copy of the final novel that Dickens completed during his lifetime. A Very Good book with a small dampstain to each board and its pastedown, corners of boards show some wear, leaves are largely clean with very minor foxing, not affecting the plates.

Synopsis

Our Mutual Friend (written in the years 1864–65) is the last novel completed by Charles Dickens and is in many ways one of his most sophisticated works, combining deep psychological insight with rich social analysis. At one level it centres on, in the words of critic J. Hillis Miller, "money, money, money, and what money can make of life" but in a deeper sense it's also about 'human values'.
