About This Item
Outing Publishing Company, New York, 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good- Condition. Book An important early study of the residents of the Appalachian Mountains captured at a time before the influence of external culture. From the entry in Wikipedia: "Inspired by the years Kephart spent among the inhabitants of the remote Hazel Creek region of the Great Smoky Mountains, the book provides one of the earliest realistic portrayals of life in the rural Appalachian Mountains and one of the first serious analyses of Appalachian culture. While modern historians and writers have criticized Our Southern Highlanders for focusing too much on sensationalistic aspects of mountain culture, the book was an important departure from the previous century's local color writings and their negative distortions of mountain people." Extensively illustrated with 32 black and white photos printed on coated paper and bound in. Size: Octavo (8-9"). 395 pages. Item Type: Book. Text block is tight and the pages are unmarked with the paper slightly toned from age. Very Good-Minus hardcover bound in textured paper with the title in gilt on the front cover and spine. There is wear around the edges of the covers. The spine is faded to a lighter red with some paper loss at the head of the spine. Previous owner's signature in pencil at the top of the half-title page. The side and bottom page edges are deckled (rough cut). Quantity Available: 1.
