About This Item
Faber and Faber, London., 1949. First edition. Octavo. 279 pages. Illustrations, including two colour plates. Five-page Preface by Herbert Read. The autobiographical section is followed by ''Extracts from War Letters of Paul Nash to his Wife, 1917- 1918, with an Introductory Note by Margaret Nash'', ''Notes for the Continuation of his Autobiography by Paul Nash'' and seven essays by Paul Nash (''Monster Field'', ''Aerial Flowers'', ''Personality of Planes'', ''Swanage or Seaside Surrealism'' etc).Loosely inserted are two Autograph Letters Signed by the author, each of about 120 words, undated but with his Judd Street address. The letters date from about 1919 as they are to Thomas Moult, the editor of the shortlived monthly magazine Voices to which Nash, as well as other modernist artists, was a contributor. 'I shall be glad to let you have something to reproduce in your very sporting magazine because I admire your enterprise & I think I may as well throw in my lot with the ''con amore'' group of your contributors. I am afraid I cannot let you have a block in time for your next issue but you shall have a drawing...' In the second letter he apologizes for not sending anything for the new Voices: ''I have been rather supernaturally busy. I hope however to make up for lost opportunities next time with a rather larger article...''Letters: each has a fold crease; very good indeed. Book: free endpapers partially tanned; a bit of spotting to rear pastedown; small scratch to white enamel in title panel on spine; near fine in very good indeed dustwrapper slightly darkened at the spine, slightly creased at head of spine where there is also a small puncture mark.
