Description

London: The Poetry Bookshop, 1916. Second Edition 2nd Printing. Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. FRASER Claud Lovat. VG, 2nd ed 1916. In its original grey paper wraps with an image in black and blue ink with the title in black ink, corners scuffed slightly, tiny chips to L edge. Second Impression stamped to upper cover corner. Internally NO inscriptions, adverts to endpages, light spotting to title page, [5], 6-32 pp. Cover designed by C Lovat Fraser. An excellent copy of a rare book, untouched. Wonderful! 26 poems, Graves's first foray into publishing. First published by the Poetry Bookshop, London, in 1913. (Higginson A1. Reilly 146. Contemp Poets 438). Graves, Robert von Ranke, poet and novelist, whose wartime experiences-during the battle of the Somme in 1916 he was so badly wounded in the lung that he was left for dead and was later able to read his own obituary in The Times-had a major impact upon his poetry, especially when combined with the thoroughgoing criticism which he had received from Edward Marsh, the editor of successive volumes of Georgian Poetry. In 1916 an impressive first volume of Graves's poems appeared, entitled Over the Brazier. See ODNB.
