Contemporary full calf with five spine compartments between double gilt rules; black spine label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title Life of Washington. Title page of vol. 1 is dated 1825; the added engraved title pages and the title page of vol. 2 are dated 1826. Stereotyped by T. H. Carter & Co., Boston. The front fixed endpaper of each volume bears the armorial bookplate of Geo. Dawson Coleman. The back of the frontispiece of volume 2 bears the name of former owner Peter Carpenter. Former owner Alfred Albert D.B. Carpenter has left variants of his name on both front fixed endpapers, as well as the title page and added engraved title page of volume 1, and the last page of text of each volume. Handwritten on the rear endpapers, Blum (a Macy's executive) recounts a dinner with the author on 20 Feb, 1936. In part it reads: "After dinner last night, Mr Allison & I were talking about M. Thiers and he told me the real story of Thier's death...this ending...is of such a nature that its inclusion in a biography of this nature would ruin the whole thing, according to JMSA." Allison's findings are related here by Blum, dated 21 February 1936. ; 8vo; 294 pages .

These six half volumes, issued as a part work over 2 years, could then be rebound by the purchaser into 3 full volumes if so desired. These half volumes have their own title pages, but volumes 1, 3 & 5 also have engraved titles for full volumes 1, 2, and 3. Half volume 6 contains printed titles for full volumes 1, 2, and 3, as well as contents pages and lists of plates. 71 of 72 steel engravings. That of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo missing and never bound in. lPerhaps the publisher had run out of copies of the plate of Sir William Forbes. Top & tail of spine of vol 6 slightly frayed.
