About This Item

Albuquerque, NM: The University of New Mexico Press, 1964. First edition. Softcover. g+ to vg. Quarto. 79, [1]pp. Original decorative wrappers. Published to accompany an Exhibition of the same name, Van Deren Coke's "The Painter and the Photograph" demonstrates with numerous paintings and photographs shown side-by-side how ever since photography began in 1837, painters have worked from photographs. The subtle additions and omissions, the corrections of the cameras distortion, illuminate in depth the artists' entire creative process. Striking examples abound from Delacroix, Degas, Manet, Gauguin, Picasso to the more obvious modern practitioners like Andy Warhol. Moderate age-toning to wrappers. Wraps in overall good+, interior in very good condition.
