India: c.1880.. Painted in colour on the lower half of a transparency (Mica). The transparency measures 7.75 x 5.75 inches. The subject is a procession of men and animals, led by an elephant bearing a red & green pennant, followed by slaves carrying jugs upon their heads, a body of men in white robes with red, green and purple sashes, and two men in coloured robes on horseback. Some of the men bear swords and shields. A piece is chipped away from the lower left corner, very good condition otherwise. Well executed with bold colours and fine detail. An example of "Company style" or "Company painting", produced in 19th Century India for sale to mostly British patrons, in particular those in the employ of the British East India Company.
