Description:
London and North Eastern Railway [1930] Book. Very Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing), printed at the Curwen Press. Slim 8vo. 63pp. Stapled card wrappers, a little marked, handled and with some light corner creasing. With a magnificent colour title-page design by Edward Bawden, plus eight colour headpiece drawings, several colour headpiece decorations and numerous black and white decorations (headpieces and tailpieces) also by Bawden. The staples rusted. A short crease impacts the tips of the upper right corners of about half the leaves and with a small area of staining to the base of a single text leaf. A nice bright copy of an extremely uncommon item - a collection of essays on various aspects of the East Coast, published to attract tourists to the area, and beautifully illustrated by Bawden..

With a one-page introduction by John Ruskin, the leading art critic of the Victorian era, as well as art patron, water-colorist and prominent social thinker and philanthropist. The introductory essay by J. Scott Taylor, editor of Fields Chromatography, deals with the durability of pigments when exposed to sunlight, followed by chapters on sources of pigments and descriptions of pigments. Very Good condition. Grey Hard cover, some darkening on upper edge with small area of foxing, 2 small spots of foxing on front edge and very slight damage to top and bottom of spine. Defects consistent with age. Pages and plates are clean and in very good condition. The color samples are bright and substantiates the claim of the color permanence of Winsor & Newton colors. This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
