Beautiful map of the Levant showing as far west as Asia Minor and the Mediterranean Sea, as well as Egypt, and as far east as Near Babylonia (modern day Iran). Armenia Major is depicted at the top of the map and the Deserts of Arabia at the bottom. Cyprus is visible in the Mediterranean Sea. This is the second of the series of six Biblical maps by Nicolaus Visscher, translated from Dutch to English by Joseph Moxon. A beautiful cartouche in the upper left depicts the coat of arms of the Order of the Garter and the cartouche in the upper right depicts Adam and Eve leaving the garden. The scale is present in the lower right corner. Side margins extended for atlas symmetry. Joseph Moxon (1627-1691), hydrographer to Charles II, was an English printer of mathematical books and maps, a maker of globes and mathematical instruments, and mathematical lexicographer. He produced the first English language dictionary devoted to mathematics.
