A closed tear to the upper rear edge associated with some creasing and rubbing. A small closed tear to the lower front edge which has been repaired with a small amount of tape to the verso. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been signed (without dedication) by Stephen Spender to the title page. Contributors to the book include Stephen Spender, John Betjeman, Cyril Connolly, Christopher Isherwood, Geoffrey Grigson et al. The Sole printing published by Faber & Faber, London in 1995 for private distribution. Only 300 copies issued. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with original brown card wrappers and a printed paper label to the spine as issued. Signed and dated by Fergus Allen to the front free end paper. The date of '17/8/95' was the date of Ted Hughes' 65th birthday and also the date the book was published. Fergus Allen (1921 -2017) was a high ranking civil servant from an Anglo Irish family, whose first collections of poems appeared when he was already over 70 years of age. With an autographed note on headed white card ('Court Green, North Tawton, Devon) from Ted Hughes to Fergus Allen, dated 29th October 1995, regarding one of Allen's poems (Pond Life) in the collection : 'Thank you for 'Pond Life' in Chris Reid's anthology for my 65'. Articulated like Aeshnea Juncea herself but more delightful, and far wittier, Thank you again -, yours Ted Hughes'. The poem mentions Ashnea Juncea [Common Hawker] being a species of dragonfly. The aforementioned Chris Reid is a poet and writer, a former editor of poetry at Faber and Faber and also the editor of 'Selected Letters of Ted Hughes' which was published in 2007. A unique item. The First UK printing published by Constable, London in 1928. The BOOK is in near Fine condition in the original variant binding of terracotta cloth, upper board and spine lettered in black. Some faint spotting to the edges and prelims. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The fragile WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Some light markings and slight edge-wear. The wrapper is protected in a removable archival protector and carries a striking period design signed with the initials 'EJIA'. These initials must be those of Edward Jeffrey Irving Ardizzone and this wrapper artwork must have been one of his earliest commissions. Born in Ireland, this is O'Leary's best known work, a science fiction novel in which 'a woman is given a drug that induces a range of Identity Transfer experiences, including life as a mouse and as her own betrayed husband ' (Science Fiction Encyclopaedia, online).
