New York: D. Appleton and Co, 1847. Hardcover. First Edition. 5.75 x 9in. xiii. 503pp.; xii. 524pp. + 5 engraved plates and 2 fold-out. Bound in recent one quarter calf over marbled boards. Leather title label in gilt. Raised bands and blind-stamped decoration of the spine. Both volumes are in VERY GOOD condition showing marginal shelf rubbing of the spines, foxing of the preliminaries up to the title pages, a former owner stamp neatly on the frontispiece versos and title pages, otherwise the binding is strong and tight, the text is clean and unmarked, and the boards remain bright and distinct. As pictured.
