From the rear cover

This unique book explores the lives and work of nearly 300 New Jersey women from the Colonial period to the present century. Included are biographies of notable, often nationally known individuals, as well as less celebrated people, whose vibrant personal stories illustrate the richness of women's experiences in New Jersey--and, really, in America--from 1600 to the present.

About the author

The Women's Project of New Jersey, Inc. was formed in 1984 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to the retrieval and publication of New Jersey women's history. Formed around a nucleus Board of Trustees, it includes more than 250 women and men who have contributed their research and writing to the cause. This volume was prepared under the direction of an editorial board chaired by Joan N. Burstyn of Syracuse University, formerly of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.
