About This Item

New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 1987. Hardcover. Foreword by George F. Kennan. 8vo. Half red cloth with gilt spine lettering and mustard paper over boards, dust jacket. 228pp. Fine/fine. Small scuff to rear flyleaf. This pristine first edition was a presentation copy from one associate dean of Harvard Business School to another: Front flyleaf boldly inscribed and signed in blue ballpoint from Ohio University's 14th president (1895-1999): "To Deane W. Malott on his 90th / birthday -- who knows about power / and used it wisely and honestly / throughout his long and distin- / guised [sic] career. / With great admiration, / warm friendship and best / wishes. / John C. Baker / 1988." Front pastedown bears elegant bookplate of the recipient, Deane Waldo Malott (1898-1996), a noted academic administrator and educator who served as assistant dean at Harvard Business School, chancellor of University of Kansas and president of Cornell University. But that's not all! For Malott asked Cousins to inscribe a decorative-edged archival bookplate, which Cousins did ("With high regard / Norm Cousins") and this is affixed to the blank leaf facing the title page -- a unique frontispiece. Cousins returned this with a Typed Note Signed, which is affixed to the front flyleaf below Baker's inscription: 1p, 8½" X 5½", Los Angeles, CA, 5 September 1990. Near fine. Original folds. On University of California School of Medicine Dean's Office letterhead, Cousins writes: "It is a privilege to have your letter...." Boldly signed. Quite an unusual copy.
