About this book

Patternmaster is Octavia Butler's first published novel. It is the fourth book chronologically in Butler's Patternmaster seriesWild Seed (1980) , Mind of my Mind (1977), and Clay's Ark (1984) follow. Another novel, Survivor (1978), was part of the series, but Butler later disowned the novel and declined to have it reprinted.

Central to the series are Patternists - people with telepathic powers, ruled by a head Patternmaster who can heal and destroy. In Patternmaster, the son of the ruler, Coransee, will stop at nothing to get the throne, even killing his brother. The novel is set in the distant future, and the Patternists are the dominant race, set apart from Clayarks, who are 'diseased' and animalistic, and another mute race that is used as slaves.

The sun had not been up long enough to burn off the cold dampness of morning when Teray and Iray left their dormitory room at Redhill School for the last time.

First Edition Identification
