About This Item
Paris: Michel Lévy Frères, 1872. Leather. Very Good. 6.5" by 4". None. A very scarce, new edition of La Peau de Chagrin, or The Magic Skin, by French novelist Honoré de Balzac. Bound in half calf with marbled boards. A new edition.'La Peau de Chagrin' was first published in 1831. Written here in the original French. Known as 'The Magic Skin' in English. Written by popular French novelist and playwright Honoré de Balzac, who is widely acclaimed for his use of realism and astute societal observations. Set in nineteenth-century Paris, 'La Peau de Chagrin' tells the story of a young man who finds a piece of shagreen with magical powers. For each wish granted to this man, the shagreen becomes smaller, consuming a part of his energy. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, generally smart, with slight rubbing to the extremities and joints. The odd mark to the boards. Head of the front joint is slightly cracked. Front hinge is somewhat strained, but holding firm. Remnants of label to the front paste down. Previous owner's pencil inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean, with age toning to the perimeters. Very Good
