About This Item
London: The Woburn Press, 1971. The New Impression of 1971...... J. H. Round, described by Page as the father of critical genealogy, wrote a number of works of monumental importance. This is possibly the best known, comprising Rounds's scholarly studies on Peerage Law (volume 1 for the most part), and Family History, (volume 2.) Critical and fascinating questions such as; which were the first Parliament writs of summons? must the writ and sitting be proved for the same person, or can a sitting in a later generation be "referred" to the writ issued to the person first summoned? are discussed. Round's masterly paper " The Muddle of the Law ", which changed thinking on peerage law, is included and every student of history would do well to study Round's critical method and analysis, and his clear and concise language. Reading Round is an exciting, as well as instructive experience. His wit and manner of dissecting his luckless academic opponents make for excellent reading. The simplicity of his exposition, however, belies his profound scholarship. This is a book, which every genealogist and Herald should possess and which every history tutor could well give his undergraduates to read. For those without tutors of such foresight the possession of a copy would be most rewarding. Two volumes Vol 1 xxviii + 362pp Vol 2 vi + 408pp including Index A LOVELY SET.
