About This Item

London: Blackie & Son Limited, 1908. Hardcover. Very good condition. A charming book, portraying an empowered little girl who travelled the world and took part in their cultural activities. She visits Holland, Morocco, Japan, India, Persia, China, North America, Greenland, Egypt, South Africa, the South Sea Islands, New Zealand and Italy. The illustrations are charming - the frontispiece shows Peggy sitting in her nursery amongst her toys, an atlas open on her lap, deciding "Where Shall I Go?" In New Zealand, "Peggy Watches a Maori Dance" shows her in a feather dress and watching a group of New Zealand children dancing with their tongues protruding. In America she is help African American children pick cotton; in Persia, she watches traffic from a Persian roof garden, the women wearing full chador; in India, she sits watching the Hindus bathing in the Ganges & women tea pickers; in Egypt she draws water from an Egyptian Well; in Greenland she watches as children prepare the sled dogs for a sledge drive. The lovely full page chromolithograph illustrations by the British children's book illustrator, Alice May Cook (1876 - 1958), whose watercolors are held at the V & A. 4to, 98pp, full page color illustrations & b&w illustrations in the text. Publishers quarter red cloth and pictorial paper covered boards, with cover illustration of young child with large red globe, red cloth spine, illustrations throughout.
