About This Item
Penny Dreadfuls and Other Victorian Horrors, Anglo, Michael. Published by Jupiter, London, 1977. First Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; 125pp. with 8 coloured plates and black and white illustrations throughout. Black cloth with silver spine titles. Volume has light toning and is otherwise fine, jacket is clipped with light edge wear. Penny Dreadfuls were cheap popular serial literature produced during the 19th century in the United Kingdom. Inspired by Gothic romances and gallows literature - the broadsheets and the spurious criminal biographies and death-cell confessions that were hawked around at public hangings. Published strictly for profit, a successful tale would be spun out for hundreds of melodramatic episodes. A useful and scarce source.
