London: J.M. Dent, 1890. 215 pp, 242 pp - 2 volume set. B&w illustrations. "This Edition is limited to Five Hundred copies for England, and Five Hundred Copies for America (acquired by Messrs. Macmillan and Co.)." 6 1/2" H, medium brown leather spines and corners (spines with 5 raised bands and gilt lettering), cream vellum boards with gilt banding, all edges gilt, red ribbon bookmarks (no longer attached, but present). Red endpapers, with each front pastedown bearing the book plate of Herbert Henry Raphael (later Sir Henry), Liberal politician, town planner and trustee of the National Portrait Gallery. Each book has three illustrations, including a frontispiece by Herbert Railton - in this set, each illustration is present in two states - one on coated art paper and one on laid paper, each with a tissue-guard. Landor presents fictionalized correspondence between the 5th century B.C. Greek general, Pericles and his lover, Aspasia and with other prominent figures of the time (the majority of the letters are between Aspasia and Cleone, an Athenian statesman). Very light toning to some pages, most tissue guards have light foxing and also on the laid paper illustrations, light to moderate corner wear on boards, light rubbing to leather edges and spine bands, volume 2 has one small corner bump, volume 1 has a very small dent on the gilt fore-edge of the text block, vellum has very light rubbing and soiling..
