Description

London: Horace Marshall & Son, 1898. Bound in dark red cloth with gilt lettering on upper board and on spine. Ends of spine softened and rubbed, a tone on tone discoloured splotch on rear board, a few tiny spots on fore edge of pages, and some neat pencil marginalia and underlines on a few pages. 245 pages plus two pages of publisher's ads bound in at rear. The author was a Victorian feminist concerned with women's rights especially regarding the welfare of prostitutes. Her father was John Grey, cousin of Charles Grey (1764-1845) who was reformist British Prime Minister from 1830-1834. This copy has the bookplate of Charles Grey Grey on front pastedown and is inscribed on front free endpaper "Ralph Geoffrey Grey from his Father / 1907", the father being no doubt Charles Grey Grey; also on the front free endpaper is a more modern inscription "Evelyn (Grey) Smith / ___ W. 27 / Vancouver". Presumably the former owners were related to the Grey family.. Second Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.
